How to stay mentally healthy in autumn (4 tips)

There’s an annual increase in anxiety as the autumn 🍂 months approach. 

Experts believe that the opening of a new school year, the preparation for the holiday season, or the failure to achieve a certain feat make people feel a certain kind of way in ending summer. One example of this is autumn anxiety and it usually happens as the season changes. 

Going from summer to fall can lead to negative emotions such as fear, worry and panic. Don’t get us wrong. There are many good things to appreciate in this season. As a matter of fact, at least 40 percent of American tag fall as their favorite season, based on a poll by YouGov. From comforting sweaters and colorful leaves to the cooler weather - it isn’t surprising why! 🎃  

The World Health Organization declared October 10 as the World Mental Health Day. This year the theme is Mental Health in an Unequal World: the World Federation for Mental Health

states that the world is polarized by the wealthy, while the poor are abandoned in their diffuclty.

What is autumn anxiety?

The same with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), autumn anxiety doesn’t have obvious external triggers. Welsh therapist Ginny Scully was the first person to discover this syndrome, after encountering numerous patients with similar symptoms in September. This led her to coining the term autumn anxiety. 

Autumn anxiety may last a few weeks. It may then disappear. The usual symptoms are anxiety, depression, fatigue, irritability and lack of interest.

What is autumn disorder and tips to prevent it

As said, autumn disorder is a seasonal affective disorder that occurs during the changes in seasons. SAD begins and ends at the same period each time of the year.

Start of the school year 🏫 

The start of another school year usually triggers autumn anxiety. Most parents witness this in their children - the mix of excitement and fear of responsibilities may mean differently for every person. How can you deal with this?

The step to take here would depend upon how well you know your child. You should start by deciding what is important in their lives, and what only causes unnecessary stress.

Are they happy with school? Are they doing well with their academics? Is the extra-curricular too much? Getting these on the right tone should help you keep your kid at ease in school.

Changes in the environment 🍁

Changes in the environment can be unsettling. And this also brings anticipatory anxiety that takes place when you know there is stress coming so you anticipate it already. This is a common autumn situation as you anticipate the colder weather.

Taming your autumn anxiety is the key here. Revisiting your daily exercise, diet, and even exposure to sunlight (if you can) should do the trick. 

Confinement after summer ☀️ 

You’ve had the best time of your life during summer. You just love the freedom and vibe it brings. Vacations, school breaks - who doesn't want them? Finally, you are able to relax, but the changing of the season is a hint that you’re about to lose your freedom and go back to your mundane, or if not, solitary life.

How do you deal with this? Experts recommend that you schedule regular rests and plan your future vacations. When you do these for yourself, you have something to look forward to as the season changes.

Refocus your mind as well while you set eyes on new goals. Use this time to pump up your self-care as well!

Too much darkness 🌆

The sad news is that you can’t change this. It is the way the universe works! When this is a situation that pulls a different nerve on you, you should see to it that getting enough sunlight in your face is your top priority in the morning. Set a schedule for it! 

Schedule a walk in the morning. Wander on nature. Go out there and ensure that you don't confine yourself. 

Dealing with autumn depression

Overall, one of the best ways to reduce your autumn anxiety is to avoid anticipating problems. When you find yourself worrying, find happiness in the little things. Reconnect with what you love to do, like playing with your dog. Or make someone smile by giving them a gift (such as Smiling Socks that puts a beam on someone’s face for sure!)
